Description

Presentation by Craig Hadley, Executive Director of TCHA, Civil War expert and re-enactor

Craig Hadley will bring to life the details of the Battle of Chickamauga, one of the key battles of the Civil War. A Spencer rifle that was most likely used in this battle is a part of the Museum collection, and will be on display during the presentation.

The battle marked the end of a Union offensive in southeastern Tennessee and northwestern Georgia. It was the most significant Union defeat in the Western Theater. It involved the second-highest number of casualties, after the Battle of Gettysburg.

Indiana regiments played a key role in averting a total disaster for the Union. Wilder's Indiana Brigade was equipped with Spencer repeating rifles, and was opposed by muzzle-loading rifles on the Confederate side, The brigade totally out-gunned the opposing troops, and was quickly re-positioned to re-enforce other Union troops where necessary.

Craig will answer questions after his presentation.
