Lafayette Tech hosts monthly hackathons, where local developers, designers and engineers come together to build tech products over the course of one day. It’s like a oneday Startup Weekend. The program starts in the morning with brainstorming ideas about could be developed throughout the day, then the teams are actually coding apps, build devices, mix technologies to quickly come up with at least an incipient stage of a product within only a few hours. At the end of the day there will be a showcase of what happened during the day, and sometimes prizes for the best participating teams or developers. Each hackathon has a particular theme (there were API hackathons, for instance, and community apps hack days in the past), and upcoming July edition is going to be an iOS Boot Camp.
What to expect
: Your instructor,
Intro to iPhone and iPad programming, with in-depth guidance to iOS apps architecture and development. Programmers mainly expected to attend, but join us even if you have only ideas for cool iPhone/iPad apps - you will learn about the thought process behind apps development.
Benjamin Brame of Allegro Dynamics, will spend most of the time talking about some of the tricky high-level concepts that make the iPhone learning curve a little nasty. Particularly, he will guide you through the Model-View-Controller architecture, view programming, the delegate design pattern, Cocoa memory management, event handling, etc. We’ll assume that (1) you have done some programming in C (or a C-like language) and (2) you are comfortable programming against documentation (i.e. can look stuff up on Google). Throughout the day, we’ll all work on developing some ideas with iOS, with the goal of having some incipient products done by the end of the day.
