Description

Presented by: Purdue University -  NIST Manufacturing Extension Partnership Center.

This is a one-day, hands-on workshop where the basic principles of 5S are presented and attendees have an opportunity to experience how to apply this lean principle/tool in a simulated production environment.  The workshop with a live simulation guides attendees through transition from a typical production environment to a much improved workplace by applying lean/5S principles.  Waste is eliminated, quality improves and productivity is increased.  At this workshop attendees will learn the 5-steps involved in applying 5S principles. During the simulation exercises, as a member of the production team, attendees will experience how to apply basic 5S concepts of scan, sort, set to order, shine, standardize & sustain. As we know, 5S is a basic building block of a lean production system, and will most likely be the first lean tool to be used.  This workshop provides an excellent opportunity for new lean practitioners to gain experience in applying this most important lean tool, and can also serve as a valuable refresher for other operations personnel who may be in some way be involved with lean implementation.

Attendees will participate, have some fun, and leave this workshop with a good understanding of how 5S concepts could be applied to enhance performance for most any type operation.  Any organization just getting started on a lean transformation would certainly benefit from having some key personnel attend this workshop. It would also benefit organizations that have been applying lean concepts, but may have some employees who have not been fully exposed to leading teams doing 5S projects.

Primary instructor for this workshop will be: Ed Hlava, Advanced Manufacturing Specialist, with Purdue University - NIST MEP Center.  Ed has broad experience in industry, and as a lean consultant/instructor.

Attendees will receive:  an Introduction to 5S Workbook and a Lean Certificate from Purdue University – NIST MEP Center
